Jackson County Obituaries

Early in 2018, Pam Fugere began discussions between Ella Sharp Museum, the Jackson District Library, and the Jackson County Genealogical Society about the development of an index of death notices, obituaries, funerals, and interments of Michigan residents and their out-of-state relatives as listed in Jackson County newspapers. With the support of the three organizations, a team of volunteers compiled and reformatted existing obituary indexes and uploaded existing card files. In 2019, the team began reviewing Jackson County newspapers from 1847 forward to fill in the gaps.

An alphabetical list of obituaries and an appendix can be found to the right. The appendix includes names of Jackson County newspapers and pertinent notes and information. The team continues to review newspapers periodically and the obituary index is updated every three months with new records. If you have any questions about accessing a particular record, reference librarians are here to answer your questions in person or by phone at 517- 788-4087 ext. 1339 or 1340.

With the advent of generative AI and keyword search functionality on JDL's newspaper database, projects reps made the decision to put the obituary index project on hold in September 2024.
