Jane Austin Book Club for September

This month we are discussing the book North & South, another of Elizabeth Gaskell's beautifully realized novels about post-Georgian Britain.  This time, the protagonists are a pair of opposites, paralleling the dichotomy in the title.   Margaret Hale, a middle class southerner who is forced to move to the northern town of Milton and John Thornton, an agressive, hard-charging mill owner.  Milton stands in for the Manchester, the heart of the industrial norht.  The great cotton mills provided much of the wealth of England and the conditions in the mills are v

Jane Austen Book Club for August

Sorry about cancelling July's meeting.  An unexpected health problem came up.  So we are meeting on August 16th at 5:00 pm in the McIntyre Room in the Carnegie Buillding, 244 W. Michigan Ave, Jackson.  We will be continuing our enjoyment with  the third installment of the BBC production of "Wives & Daughters," as shown on Masterpiece Theatre. 

Series Review: The Destroyermen

I'm a big fan of "Alternate History," stories of what might have happened if certain events in the past had never happened or had been resolved in a different manner.  I recommend Harry Turtledove and S. M.

Jane Austen Book Club for July

We are meeting on July12th at 5:00 pm in the McIntyre Room in the Carnegie Buillding, 244 W. Michigan Ave, Jackson.  We will be enjoying the third installment of the BBC production of "Wives & Daughters," as shown on Masterpiece Theatre.  We will be serving tea with all the trimmings as we enjoy the lush portrayal of country life in England, circa 1850's.
