Rock With Us

JDL’s Summer Reading Program, which runs from June 1 through July 28, encourages children, teens, and their families
to keep reading throughout the summer. Studies have shown reading throughout the summer is crucial to maintaining
reading skills for the next school year, and stopping the “summer slide.”

Participants may join the program by registering through JDL’s online portal, Beanstack, or at any of the 13 library locations. Readers will enjoy reading, doing fun activities, reporting their reading success, receiving fun badges and prizes. Babies, children and teens receive a free book just for signing up. Adults will have lots of opportunities to earn badges and prizes too.

All 13 branches have scheduled activities like scavenger hunts, crafts, musicians, and performers for everyone. Experience the world of dinosaurs with Paleo Joe. Laugh along with Joel Tacey and his magical comedy show. Immerse yourself in your favorite fairy tales as Stevens Puppets presents Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty.

Summer reading concludes with a rockin’ event on August 4 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Blackman Park in
downtown Jackson. There will be music, activities, and special prizes for the VIPs who complete the Summer Reading
Program. Kevin Devine, an award-winning children’s entertainer and songwriter will open the festivities. Headlining will
be Airtight, Jackson’s R&B band.

JDL’s Summer Reading Program would not be possible without generous donations from our sponsors; The Friends of
the Jackson District Library, County National Bank and Arrow Swift Printing and Copy Center.

Winter 2017 – 2018 Newsletter

Your Library, Your Way

Beginning January 1, 2018, we will be making some improvements that will transform the way you use the library and make your life so much easier.

Unlimited Renewals

We’re taking away the worry. If you borrow it, you keep it until someone else wants it and we will automatically renew it for you! Or bring it back when you are ready! The “due date” is going the way of the card catalog. Don’t know what a card catalog is? It’s like a paper search engine. Ask your librarian about them.

This will be an option no matter what type of format you have checked out: books, movies, music, etc… Old or new.

Increased Holds

Place up to 50 holds, regardless of format.

Movies, Your Way!

No more waiting before you can place a hold on a new movie. If you see it in our online catalog, you can request it. Even if a movie is so new it isn’t out yet. You will want to talk to our staff about ways you can receive alerts so you know what’s coming weeks in advance.

Keep Movies Longer

All DVDs will check out for 7 days. No more 2-day checkouts, regardless of how popular or new the movie is. It will still be possible to drop by a branch and see what’s new because a browsing selection of Hot Picks movies will be available. These are the only items not available for holds and they cannot be renewed, which means there will always be something new to catch when you visit your local branch.

Library of Michigan Awards Funds to JDL for Project BRIDGE

We are pleased to announce the receipt of a $150,000 two-year grant from the Library of Michigan‘s LSTA (Library Services & Technology Act) Collaborative Library Services Grant Program for the development and implementation of Project BRIDGE (Building Relationships In Diverse Generational Experiences). JDL currently provides Outreach Services to homebound patrons and care centers; however, Project BRIDGE will supplement this traditional program with innovative services for citizens living independently or in residential facilities. As the first wave of “Baby Boomers” reach age 70, the importance of providing special programs for this demographic group increases.

To better serve the needs of this growing population, JDL will collaborate with our partners: disAbility Connections, Friends of the Jackson District Library, Lloyd Ganton Retirement Centers, Inc., Jackson County Department on Aging, and the Jackson Symphony Guild to develop and deliver these services. Project BRIDGE is a multi-pronged approach to serve these patrons, their families, and caregivers. Find out more about the programs Project BRIDGE offers in this season’s newsletter.

Read it and Reap!

The concept is simple; the rewards are priceless!

  • Read a book to your infant, toddler or preschooler.
  • The goal is to have read 1,000 books before your child starts kindergarten. You can repeat books as many times as you like.
  • Reading just one book a night will equal 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in 2 years and 1,095 books in three years. Since most children start kindergarten around age 5, you have more time than you think.

Promote life-long reading habits and bond with your child! Register at or any Jackson District Library location beginning March 1, 2017. Receive a book bag and a prize for signing up. Keep track of your reading online or on a paper log. Stop in anytime you have completed 100 books and receive a rubber ducky. After finishing 1000 books, your child will receive a free book.
